As technology has advanced over the years, we are finding ourselves in a world where business is often conducted electronically. For example, we can now use our phone to scan and send documents, rather than sending a physical copy through the mail or faxing a document with a fax machine or printer.

ATBS has embraced this change by providing clients with the option to email in receipts and documents they have scanned with their phone. Now that this practice has become more popular, we decided to check out the highest-rated scanning apps and put each one to the test.

To get the most out of any scanning app, follow these tips:

  • Make sure the document you are scanning is on a solid-colored background.
  • Make sure the camera is in focus so the image is as clear as possible.
  • Circle any part of the document that you want to stand out with black ink rather than using a highlighter.
  • Uncrumple and smooth all documents and receipts and make them as flat as possible.
  • Read over the instructions of your scanner app so you know how it works and are aware of all of the features.

CamScanner is often recommended by ATBS because it’s the app that we believe is the best for scanning and sending in documents. The free version of the app has many functions that make scanning receipts a breeze.

Pros

  • Image quality is excellent. The words are very clear, which is one of the most important aspects of a scanning app.
  • Autocrops images for you so you don’t have to worry about the background being in the scan.
  • There is a “Batch” option so you can take photos of each one of your receipts and they will all be uploaded into one document.
  • Ability to edit your document however you wish to make sure everything is legible.
  • Feature to sign documents, write on them, and create specific notes about the document.
  • There are many organizational features with the free version such as:
    • Creating up to three file folders to organize your documents
    • A search feature
    • Tagging options

Cons

  • N/A

  • Can edit your images to ensure you get the clearest possible quality.
  • Able to scan multiple documents into one file.
  • Able to organize documents with a tagging system and search feature.

Cons

  • Image quality is not as good as CamScanner or Adobe Scan.

FineScanner

Pros

  • Very high-quality images.

Cons

  • Only allows you to keep six documents at a time.
  • Once you scan your six documents, you have to start deleting them in order to scan any more. This isn’t very helpful, especially for an owner-operator who is scanning multiple receipts at a time.
  • The only way to have unlimited space is to upgrade to their premium app.

Pros

  • Able to edit them to make sure the words are legible.
  • Can crop the image.
  • Can scan multiple documents and put them into one single document.
  • Ability to add folders to help with organization.

Cons

  • Image quality is not the best when compared to the other apps. The flash washes out some of the words, fades out the image and makes it difficult to read.
  • There are constant popup boxes asking you to upgrade to PRO while you are trying to scan documents. This is frustrating when you are trying to scan and edit your documents.

    • Some of the ads makes you wait 5-10 seconds before you can exit out and return to the app.
    • It makes it hard when you’re busy trying to get all of your receipts uploaded into one place, and you have to wait all the time to exit out of an ad.

Scanbot

image22.png InkedimageScanBot.jpg

Pros

  • Allows you to scan your documents and receipts.

Cons

  • Scanner quality of the free version is not very good
  • It is hard to read some of the words in the example document and the receipt is very faded, making it difficult to read as well.
  • In order to have more features and better image quality, you would have to upgrade for $8.99 per month. We would not recommend this since there are many free apps that give you much better image quality.

Overall, ATBS recommends the first few apps we looked at. CamScanner has tons of amazing features and is very user-friendly. Adobe Scan is simple and to the point, and is perfect if you don’t care about the extra features. Give some of these apps a try and see for yourself which document scanning apps you think are the best.
